The people in India lived from the unconscious. In the West we live from our conscious mind. We organize and direct everything. In India they flow with the unconscious. It’s very upsetting at times. It can be very harmful at times, but it has a wonderful heart in it, a grace in it, and they are open to the supernatural, the unconscious, they are open to the supernatural, and I felt somehow there was some abiding presence there in India from the beginning. Our conscious mind — believe it or not — is not in charge of our day-to-day behaviour. That claim may seem counter intuitive and contrary to our experience, but it has been demonstrated in controlled experiments time and again. By the time our conscious mind is aware of any particular decision or action, it has already been made or enacted by some other part of our brain.
